How do you bring the best and brightest teachers to the school districts that need them the most?

There's no easy answer to this tough educational riddle. But in Arkansas, school advocates believe they've found an approach that works: offer top-notch housing incentives to top-notch teachers.

The Arkansas Teacher Housing Development Foundation was created by the state government to give high-performing educators incentives such as low-interest loans and down-payment assistance. In return, teachers commit to five years' continuous employment in high-priority school districts.

Regions has worked closely with the program's organizers and participants to help create financing tools that make it easy for teachers to live comfortably and affordably in their new neighborhoods.

"These homes help anchor them in the community, so they're less likely to pursue opportunities outside those high-priority school districts," says Melanie Yelder, director of the Arkansas Teacher Housing Development Foundation. "Most studies show that when teachers have some ties outside the school in the community, it's better for students and better for parents."

Three Arkansas school districts already have benefited from the program, which continues to grow. Of course, the greatest benefits will be seen in the years to come, as these talented teachers inspire students and colleagues alike.
