SEC Small Business Salute

Ty Samples, former Auburn basketball player, has found that determination for continued self-improvement, a skill he needed to remain competitive while playing SEC basketball, has made him successful in the real estate business as well.

Name: Ty Samples
Alma Mater: Auburn University
Sport: Basketball
Position: Guard, Forward
Years Played: 1956-1959

Highlights: Part of the 1958-1959 teams that achieved the longest winning streak in Auburn basketball history

Business: Samples Properties, Inc.

Samples played as a guard and forward at Auburn from 1956 until 1959.  He was on the teams that achieved a 30-game winning streak in 1958 and 1959 – the longest winning streak in Auburn basketball history.  The 1959 team was ranked 7th in the nation.

It was during his time at Auburn that Coach Joe Eaves taught Samples that basketball requires a total team effort and that everyone must improve constantly in order to remain competitive.   Samples has found that these lessons are effective in making his real estate company, Samples Properties, Inc., successful and competitive in its market.

Samples graduated from Auburn in 1960 with a degree in industrial management.  After graduating, he worked at Teledyne Brown Engineering Company before opening Samples Properties, Inc., a small commercial real estate company that has been serving the North Alabama business community since 1970.  Samples Properties primarily deals with office building development and property management.

“Basketball and business both require commitment to working as a team for a common goal and a positive attitude in good and bad circumstances,” Samples said.

Samples found success in real estate by applying the principles that SEC basketball taught him and by having a customer focused attitude.  “We take care of our customers and because of that we are successful at retaining our clients,” Samples said.

Samples is a member of the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, has coached children’s basketball in the Huntsville City leagues for 20 years and has served on the Alabama Athletic Hall of Fame since 1990.
