Understanding that success is not about himself but about the team’s performance, is what lead Mike Sanders, along with his teammates, to the SEC Championship in 1962. While at Mississippi State University, Sanders was a part of the track team from 1960 to 1964, and he considers the SEC Championship the highlight of his sports career. He also played on the MSU football team in 1960.

Sanders grew up working in the family business in which his father, Jimmy Sanders, started in 1953. After graduating from Mississippi State University in 1964, Sanders returned to Cleveland to continue working at Jimmy Sanders, Inc.; A full-service agricultural distribution company that provides seeds, fertilizers, chemicals, grain merchandizing and agronomic services and technology.  They service six states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee.

Being a former athlete and running a business, Sanders sees himself as a coach that plans and sets the direction, but his TEAM gets the job done.

In his spare time, Sanders keeps himself busy by serving on various boards for First United Methodist Church, and on the Delta State University Foundation Board of Directors.  He keeps up with MSU by being on the Mississippi State Graduate School Advisory Board for the School of Agricultural Business and the Mississippi State University Bulldog Club and M Club.  He is also active in the Lions Club, is a member of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Board of Directors for Merchants and Farmers Bank.

Although Sanders has retired from the sports world, the greatness of being on top has not departed from his everyday life.  As an entrepreneur, Sanders says, “I like the satisfaction of being successful.  By nature, I am a very competitive person.  I enjoy being able to compete well in an arena that involves very large corporations that operate worldwide.”
