Planning Your Weekend Escape

You've decided to take a weekend trip, but gas prices are high and you only have a couple of days to do all you want to do. Read on for tips on how to make your getaway more efficient and enjoyable.

Make a Plan
The first step is planning. Chances are you'll probably only have one or two destinations in mind, but if you think you might not have time to see and do all that you want to, making a quick itinerary can help.

First, list all the places you want to visit on a sheet of paper. Then, divide and prioritize the list into "must-see" and "may-see" destinations, with a third list of places that can wait until the next trip. Figure out how long it will take you to visit your "must-see" destinations, and, when you're done visiting them, visit as many of your secondary picks as you can with any time you have left over.

Fueling for Fun
Before you visit any of your destinations, you have to get there first. Since it's a weekend trip, you'll likely be driving.

Budget how much you'll spend on gas by entering your destination and car model into the road trip calculator on the American Automobile Association Web site at www.aaa.com. There are also lots of simple things you can do to improve your gas mileage along the way and find the best gas prices in the area you're visiting.

There are other small tweaks you can make to make your car more efficient, too. Make certain your tires are properly inflated and your oil and air filters have been changed before hitting the road. Also, leave any extra items you don't need at home. An extra 100 pounds inside your car reduces miles per gallon by up to 2 percent.

Pack Light
When you want to escape for a few days, you don't need to pack heavy. Instead, grab a small bag and pack light.

For a small trip, choose pants, jeans, shorts, or skirts that can be worn with more than one top. Then pack enough shirts, socks, and underwear to have one for each day, as well as an extra just in case. Even in warm weather, throw in a light weatherproof jacket for if the weather turns ugly.

For toiletries, pack only the basics, such as soap, toothpaste, and brush; deodorant, shampoo, and conditioner; and a razor. Use an organizer pouch with individual compartments to avoid a mess.

Travel Quick Tip
Seasoned travelers know the ropes of packing an efficient overnight bag. What's the best advice they can offer? Remember to pack your toiletries in a plastic bag. It might keep you from having to clean up a shampoo spill.
