Social Responsibility

The intersection of compassion and capitalism is a prosperous place to set up shop, and that's exactly where Calvin Mills Jr. first found himself a decade ago.

Mills was working at a major electronics retailer when a low-income family came in looking for an affordable computer. Unfortunately, the store offered nothing in their price range. But as they were leaving, Mills was struck by inspiration. He ran after the family and offered to custom-build for them a good machine at a low price.

He has since turned his belief in affordable computers into a full-time business called C&V Technologies in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. And when it came time to expand, Mills turned to Seedco Financial's Baton Rouge Small and Micro Business Loan Fund, a Regions-supported nonprofit that provides innovative and flexible financing options not available through traditional financial institutions.

Mills, who has been repeatedly honored as a top Louisiana entrepreneur, says the funding for his business has let him give his neighbors a service that wasn't available when he was growing up.

"I never had the opportunity to purchase a computer or own one as a child," he says. "I just figured this was my opportunity to break down the digital divide between upper-income and lower-income families."

As Mills' business grows, so does his commitment within the community. He recently launched EduTech, a nonprofit that will use 10 percent of his gross computer sales to help strengthen local neighborhoods.
