Retiring from Regions

Regions understands that making the decision to retire can be exciting, worrisome or both.  In either case, it will be important that you make a decision with the right information on hand. The information below explains the pension benefits available to certain associates.

When you are ready to retire, it is important that you inform your manager and Corporate Benefits 60-90 days in advance of your anticipated final work day to provide plenty of time to get your pension benefits processed.

The Retirement Plan (Pension Plan) was split into two plans in 2016.

  • Regions Financial Corporation Retirement Plan for Associates.  This plan includes individuals that were previously determined to be eligible for the plan and were actively employed by Regions on 1/1/2016.  See the Regions Retirement Plan for Associates Summary Plan Description (SPD) for more information regarding Plan rules and benefits.
  • Regions Financial Corporation Retirement Plan.  This plan includes all individuals that were previously determined to be eligible for the plan and were not actively employed by Regions on 1/1/2016.  See the Regions Retirement Plan Summary Plan Description (SPD) for more information regarding Plan rules and benefits.

Eligibility for a Benefit from the Retirement Plans (Pension Plans)

Not all Regions associates are participants in the Retirement Pension Plans.  The benefits available to associates retiring from Regions vary depending on your past employment with Regions.

Associates employed by AmSouth prior to November 1, 2006*

  • Eligible for a monthly benefit upon termination if at least age 55 with five or more Years of Service.

If you were employed by AmSouth prior to November 1, 2006, you may log into the Pension Manager to view your current pension information.

Associates employed by Regions prior to January 1, 2001*

  • Eligible for a monthly benefit upon termination if at least age 65 with five years of Participation in the Plan or age 55 with 10 Years of Continuous Service or 10 years of employment. Associates who began employment with Regions as a result of Regions’ merger with Union Planters are not eligible for a benefit under the Regions Retirement Plan.

* Must have become a participant in the plan prior to January 1, 2009.

You are not eligible to receive a benefit from the Pension Plan if you do not meet the above criteria.  If you are unsure of your Plan status, contact the Benefits Assistance Center at 1-877-562-8383, option 1 to verify your participation in the Plan and to begin receiving your benefit.

If you are vested, but not yet eligible to receive a pension benefit, you will receive a letter explaining your benefit within 2 years of your separation from employment.

This is a brief description of eligibility. Refer to the applicable Plan’s SPD for more detailed information. If any discrepancies exist between this information, the SPD and the Plan’s Legal Document, the Legal Document will govern.
