Many Regions associates in Louisiana were born next to the beautiful waters along the Gulf Coast, and we are proud to call this area our home. Because we work and play in this ecologically diverse area, we are especially excited to support the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP), which is leading habit rescue and restoration efforts in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
BTNEP continues to lead restoration of the 4.2 million acre marine and estuary habitat between the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers in South Louisiana. Since the Gulf oil spill disaster began, BTNEP has been at the forefront of efforts to protect the fragile estuary areas from oil and to rescue wildlife harmed by the spill.
To support BTNEP, Regions established a Gulf Response Fund and made a donation in the fund to support wildlife rescue and transport, habitat restoration, volunteer response, coastal impact studies, and long-term coastal research and recovery. Regions continues to accept tax-deductible donations to the Gulf Response Fund at all 85 Regions Bank locations throughout South Louisiana.
“The estuary is the foundation of our culture, economy and habitat in South Louisiana,” said Danny Montelaro, South Louisiana Area President for Regions Bank. “BTNEP is one of the unsung heroes of this crisis and every donation to the BTNEP Gulf Response Fund will be used to preserve the marine and estuary habitats put at risk by the Gulf oil spill.”
Among other relief efforts, BTNEP is currently conducting bird population surveys, assisting in bird rescue and transport logistics, and photographically documenting oil impacts. In addition, BTNEP continues caring for oiled sea turtles, organizing more than 20,000 volunteers in partnership with local and national environmental organizations, and replanting marsh grass at a cost of $1 to $2 per plant.
“Long after official response efforts are complete, our estuaries will still need our help,” said Kerry St. Pe’, program director for the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program. “The Gulf Response Fund helps insure the ability of BTNEP to continue to preserve, protect, and restore our estuary for future generations. We are extremely grateful to Regions Bank and its customers for joining us in the fight to repair oil spill damaged wetlands, rebuild our land, and preserve our way of life.”
BTNEP is not the only organization that Regions has supported in the aftermath of the Gulf oil spill. Regions has enacted programs to help individuals, businesses and communities affected. Some of these programs include a payment assistance plan for business owners, a Customer Assistance Program for consumers and paid time off for associates to volunteer in their communities.
Regions’ goal is to help customers deal with the potential financial impact of the spill and to know the options they have for assistance, if and when needed. More information is available at www.regions.com, at 1.800.REGIONS (734.4667) or at any Regions Bank branch.
