How to Save Energy at Home
Previous

Consider these 10 tips on how to save energy at home and increase your overall energy efficiency.

  1. Don’t just turn off devices and appliances when they’re not in use — unplug them, too.
  2. Wash only full loads of laundry and dishes. Air-dry when you can, and use only cold water.
  3. Run washers, dryers and dishwashers early in the day or late in the evening when energy prices are lower.
  4. Look for Energy Star labels when you purchase light bulbs, appliances and electronics.
  5. Use sensors, dimmers and timers on lights to reduce lighting usage.
  6. Cover your kitchen exhaust fan when you aren’t using it to stop air leaks.
  7. Replace or clean your air conditioner and furnace filters once a month, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
  8. Raise the temperature of your thermostat by a few degrees in the summer and lower it in the winter.
  9. Install high-performance windows, which save on energy costs and help protect upholstery and wood from UV rays.
  10. Use blinds, drapes and shades to help cool your home in the summer and heat your home in the winter.
