A Comprehensive Guide to Relocating

The countdown to moving day is on.

Here’s what to do.

30+ Days In Advance:

• Notify your landlord, or put your house up for rent or sale.
• Contact your insurance agents to transition coverage to your next locale.
• Contact a title company and your old and new state and county tax offices to inquire about any outstanding tax obligations and what needs to be done to resolve them.

Two Weeks in Advance:

• Notify state officials and attorneys to transfer or settle any alimony or child support.
• Arrange to shut off and start utilities.

One Week in Advance:

• Give your new address to the U.S. Postal Service, doctors and others who bill you regularly, such as credit card companies. Even if you’ve set up automatic bill pay for these companies, you’ll still want to notify them of the change.
• Contact your bank and financial advisor.

When You Arrive:

• Record moving expenses for possible tax deductions.
• Contact insurance providers with your new driver’s license number.
• Update your car registration and learn any state-specific driving rules.
• Transfer medical records to new providers.
• Register to vote, sometimes as you apply for your driver’s license.
