What you need to open a bank account

You’ll need documents demonstrating proof of residence in the United States like a utility bill or rental agreement for your home address. Additionally, a primary and secondary form of identification are both required – at least one of each type. Below are lists of ID examples Regions may accept.

Generally, you will need proof of residence in the United States, documents demonstrating that proof of residence and both a primary form of identification and secondary form of identification. One of each ID type is required along with your proof of residence documents. Here is a list of qualifying forms of identification Regions may accept:

Primary ID

Non-citizens can not open an account online. Please visit a branch or make an appointment to get started.

Being a resident alien means you meet either the Green Card Test or Substantial Presence Test, meaning you are currently a green card holder or have been present in the U.S. for at least 31 days during the current calendar year and 183 days over a 3-year period using a weighted formula. For the Substantial Presence Test, days present this year count 100% toward your day total, prior year days count as 1/3 and days from two years prior count as 1/6.

Non-resident aliens do not meet this criteria, for example if you’re only visiting the U.S. on short assignment.
